At BCG, Visionaries navigate complexity with ease. They use their insight and intuition to identify the solutions that will create lasting impact. Janice goes deep to understand challenges.
Something magical happens when you are part of a BCG team. You work in new industries and domains; you see new perspectives; you challenge yourself, each other, and your clients; and you grow in ways you never imagined.
My journey at BCG has been an intellectually thrilling ride. Through my projects, I've worked across many industries and topics, from cable network architecture to retail promotion analytics. Through my work across our Southeast Asia and North America offices, I have also been exposed to the diversity of problems that our global clients face.
What amazes me most at BCG is the fact that everyone I have met here is unbelievably talented and passionate, yet humble. I'm inspired every day because I get to work on meaningful, complex issues for our clients with this group of wonderful people.
Janice holds a bachelor of science (economics) and bachelor of business management (finance), summa cum laude, from the Singapore Management University. Before rejoining BCG in Toronto, Janice worked at Starwood Hotels & Resorts managing their specialty select brands in the Asia-Pacific region. She also spent time in investment banking.
Q: What international experiences at BCG have been the most interesting for you?
A: During my time in the BCG Singapore office, I spent nine months in BCG Jakarta on a telecommunications project to understand how to better provide mobile services to the underserved market. It was fascinating to learn about how different the industry dynamics were in the emerging economies versus developed markets. For example, in these rural villages, consumers would own SIM cards but rent mobile phones for use.
As part of the Associate Abroad program, I got to spend a year in the BCG Toronto office. This was a unique experience in which I got to live and work in a different country. It was interesting to see how the BCG culture and way of working are so similar across the offices. I felt at home right away despite being far from home.
Q: How do you maintain a sustainable career balance at BCG?
A: I know the little things that keep me sane and prioritize them. For me, it’s going to Pilates once during the workweek (when I’m not traveling) and Friday night dinners with my husband. For others, it may be putting their kids to bed every night or going for drinks with friends. I calendar these commitments and communicate them to my team at the start of each project so that they can help keep me on track. What I find surprising is how supportive BCG people are to make sure I can make it work!
Q: How would you describe the BCG community?
A: Three words: talented, passionate, and humble. BCG is truly a melting pot of incredibly smart, talented people with various backgrounds and interests. Among the people I have worked with are an ex-software engineer with five patents to his name, an ex-professional poker player, an ex-news producer, and a restaurateur!
Each of them brings to BCG a passion for life and a drive for excellence that is highly infectious. The positive energy in the workplace inspires me every day. Most of all, everyone I have met is incredibly humble, always willing to share their time and perspectives and learn from one another.
