North America Marketing Strategy and Analytics Director, Boston
At BCG, Storytellers synthesize complex information and ideas. They believe in bringing the whole team together to get a broader perspective. Sara finds clarity in a complex world.
The best part of working at BCG is my team. Together, we have been able to push the boundaries of marketing at BCG, while creating opportunities for each of them to grow in their own careers.
BCG has been a place where I have been able to chart my own course—starting as a recruiter of HBS students to developing the strategy for building our brand in North America. BCG has trusted and believed in my ability to take on these new challenges and roles with success.
Enabling my success are the mentors I've found within the firm: men and women who have also navigated through different roles and functions. Their advice has been invaluable and I try to give back by playing a mentorship role for others.
Prior to BCG, Sara worked in both strategy consulting at a small boutique consulting firm in Boston and marketing at Staples. She started her career at BCG as the Harvard Business School recruiting director and now heads up the North America marketing strategy team. She holds a degree in economics from Skidmore College and an MBA from MIT Sloan School of Management.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I enjoy the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects and challenges related to promoting the BCG brand. Our regional leadership is very supportive of innovation—setting up a process to ensure you pilot the best ideas, having a way to quickly measure its success or failure, and learning how to do it better next time. In my role, I enjoy piloting new marketing technologies, such as social media, and processes to see if they can have a significant impact on improving our brand perceptions.
Q: Why did you choose to work at BCG?
A: I chose to join BCG because the culture was similar to other organizations in which I've thrived: analytical, driven, humble, collaborative. This personality is shown throughout the recruiting process and rings true today in my day-to-day work with BCGers.
Q: How do you maintain a sustainable career balance at BCG?
A: Priorities and boundaries. It's important to create the spaces you need to attend to both your work and home priorities. I've also found my managers have been very supportive in flexible work arrangements. I've worked at reduced capacity in the past and continue to work from home on certain days, which helps with life logistics.
