Utility’s Transformation Increases Renewables, Reduces Customer Bills

A leading power company develops a forward-looking transformation strategy to take it into the next decade and beyond.

Like utility companies everywhere, a leading utility was facing disruptive forces. It had to cope with a combination of increasing retail electric rates, increasing needs for integrating distributed photovoltaic (DG PV), an evolving regulatory landscape, new technologies, and changing customer expectations. The company was in the process of developing plans to address these complex challenges and then faced accelerated timelines after its regulatory commission ordered multiple comprehensive filings to be completed within just four months. 

To address the challenges, the utility turned to BCG to help it develop a comprehensive transformation plan. To do this, the utility and BCG, with support from other partners, conducted a detailed analysis across five areas of the operation: generation, transmission and distribution, DG PV, market and regulatory models, and customer options. BCG worked directly with the executive team to create a long-term plan for delivering on the filings. As a result of a significant amount of effort from employee teams across the organization, the utility met the aggressive deadlines, delivering a comprehensive set of detailed, actionable clean energy transformation plans to its regulatory commission. 

BCG then helped management to implement an enterprise-wide transformation initiative to facilitate the fast-paced implementation of programs outlined in the plans. 

The utility company is now transforming its operations with a strategy that focuses on a series of important initiatives designed to:

  • Transform generation to be more modern, flexible, and clean
  • Modernize the transmission and distribution network
  • Make improvements to integrate even more distributed PV
  • Procure cheaper fuels to lower customer costs
  • Design new market and regulatory models
  • Develop new customer products and service offerings
  • Improve internal processes and evolve culture to be more customer-focused

BCG helped the utility develop a forward-looking strategy that clearly identified the benefits that could be realized by 2030. These would include an increase in renewables to more than 65% and a 20% decrease in customer bills. The long-term plan also calls for triple the amount of distributed solar, largely rooftop PV.
