Jenny Is a Transformative Pioneer

BCG Digital Ventures Senior Strategic Designer, Shanghai

At BCG, Pioneers have the courage to take action on unique insights. They share and activate ideas that enable our clients to gain the competitive edge. Jenny seeks a new perspective.

BCG Digital Ventures has motivated me to dream big with confidence, then take action to make it come true.

Jenny

In Jenny's Words

I joined BCG Digital Ventures after starting two businesses in the education and events space. As every entrepreneur will tell you, “If it were easy, everyone would be doing it.” I joined the BCGDV family because I was inspired by the multidisciplinary talent and the startup-in-a-box approach to going from 0 to 1 alongside some of the largest companies of the world.

BCGDV has given me the opportunity to invent and launch startups across Australia, the United States, Southeast Asia, and China. In addition to gaining exposure to and experience in different geographies, I have formed deep relationships with the most talented people working in our tech-driven world. This is something I never dreamed about in my solo-entrepreneurial days.

About Jenny

Jenny holds a bachelor’s degree in commerce (covering services marketing, tourism and hospitality, and human resources management) from the University of New South Wales.

Q: How do you get to utilize your unique skill set within a team?

A: At BCG Digital Ventures, no one has the same skill set, and everyone comes from a very different walk of life. I'm a strategic designer, which involves leading design research and taking part in the ideation and innovation process. But I bring to the table my entrepreneurial stamina and digital product management skills to every venture. From the get-go, everyone takes the time and effort to understand you as an individual. I believe that is how everyone’s unique skill set is utilized and appreciated.

Q: What did you learn in your first year on the job?

A: Working alongside top tech talent and interacting with technology that will power the future, I learned quickly that we are hired not only to build the businesses of tomorrow but also to break some of the businesses of today. In the first year on the job, I learned to be comfortable with ambiguity, to be confident about dreaming big, and most importantly, to inspire those around me to do the same.

Q: How do you maintain a sustainable career balance at BCG?

A: A mentor once told me, “There is no such thing as balance; it’s called prioritization.” This is true in the product development world, but I also find this principle a game changer in achieving “balance” in my personal and professional life. Having a structured way to value, rank, and prioritize different activities and choices in my life is the key way that I maintain a sustainable career. I once thought being a “yes person” was a great thing. But over the years, I’ve learned that good prioritization enables you to say “yes” to the right things and not “yes” to everything. You now know my secret; good luck!

Q: If you weren't working at BCG, what would you be doing?

A: I would probably find myself in the startup ecosystem again. It is incredibly addictive to go from nothing to something. The process of going from a nugget of an idea to making it real is something I don’t think I will ever get sick of.

Q: What international experiences have been the most interesting for you?

A: In July 2017, I transferred from DV Sydney to DV Shanghai for one year to help set up our China presence. This has been the most interesting experience, from both a life and career perspective. As a Hong Kong-born Chinese raised and schooled in Australia, I had the cultural understanding and language skills to be completely immersed in the China context. What was particularly interesting was that I discovered a whole different set of digital behaviors in China. You can't really understand the word “leapfrog” unless you have spent time on the ground in China!
