BCG has met and exceeded my greatest expectations for professional development and impact.
I'm a physician who's passionate about transforming health care. I recognized early in my career how advanced and amazing our health care system is—but also how much disparity and variability exists in how that system and its capabilities are applied. While practicing medicine, I came to recognize that my desire to systemically transform health care would be best realized by working with top leaders of our nation’s largest health care providers. BCG has afforded me that opportunity and the ability to leverage my expertise as a physician to create the impact I want to have.
BCG has been an amazing platform and lever for me to achieve my goals. It is a place with tremendous integrity that gives you the latitude to chart your own course and pursue what's important to you. I've been fortunate to be able to use my passion to not only help clients but also help identify and develop the next generation of physicians and health care services leaders at BCG.
Josh holds an MD from the University of Virginia and a master's in health policy research from the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to BCG, Josh completed a residency in emergency medicine at Northwestern University, where he served as chief resident, and a fellowship in health services research and economics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and the Wharton School.
Q: How has BCG helped you grow and succeed?
A: I had a colleague tell me, "If you're not uncomfortable, you're not growing." That may not seem like an inspiring statement, but it's true. Reflecting on my time at BCG, the organization has done a great job ensuring I'm always challenged and a bit out of my comfort zone—always setting the bar a bit higher to encourage me to stretch. This "stretch" environment, coupled with excellent training, coaching, and mentorship, has helped me grow more than I could have imagined.
Q: What inspires you about BCG?
A: BCG's focus on value, and the integrity with which they pursue that focus, is what inspires me and makes me proud to be part of the organization. Time and time again, I've seen BCG teams seek out the truth and stand behind a perspective even if it's unpopular or counter to the other prevailing views. BCG teams are focused on what will create the most value for the client and what's needed to help them successfully achieve that value. I personally use this lens to guide my client work to ensure I'm always focused on the right priorities.
Q: How do you maintain a sustainable career balance at BCG?
A: Consulting demands a lot from you. It's a client service business, and it's often unpredictable. I've found that the most effective way to maintain balance is to put clear boundaries around my work and ruthlessly prioritize my other commitments. Spending time with my family and kids is very important to me. There is a system at BCG that helps me make those commitments transparent within the case team so that I can be sure to stick to them. It’s the time outside of work that's needed in order to perform well at work; that is well recognized.
