In Chris’s Words

My journey to BCG was one of self-discovery, having previously worked in both consulting and the industry (e.g. the client side). My previous consulting experience exposed me to the pace of consulting, while my industry experience gave me an operational lens and subject matter expertise that enhance my client work today.

The opportunities for learning and growth at BCG are endless. Even though my industry focus is technology, media, and telecommunications (TMT), the opportunity to touch on so many issues, ways to solve issues, and types of clients within TMT is truly varied. As a project leader, one of the biggest learnings has been around developing people—whether affiliated with my cases, practice area, or office. The apprenticeship model is core to BCG and is what makes the firm unique. Furthermore, the level of talent, the degree of impact, the availability of resources, and the feeling of collegiality—even within such a large firm—are astounding.

Chris holds an electrical engineering degree from University of Toronto and an MBA from Ivey Business School.


Q: How has BCG helped you grow and succeed?

A: I joined BCG as a lateral hire from industry (e.g. the client side). My first six months on the job required me to adjust to the way BCG approaches cases, analyzes problems, and approaches solutions, in addition to building relationships with the people who I support, who support me, and with whom I am affiliated. BCG put me in a position to succeed by being thoughtful about my case assignments, surrounding me with the right mentors given my background, and providing continuous feedback.

Q: What characteristics do you believe define a BCGer?

A: BCGers are positive people, which is a great asset as there very rarely is a case that is without its bumps from start to finish. This attitude manifests itself in three ways. First, under stressful situations BCGers are able to remain focused on the solution. Second, as a project leader I often have associates and consultants offering to load-balance work when one member of the team needs help. Third, on longer cases or cases requiring travel, the case team is like your family. Working with positive people bodes well for sustainability and the outcome of the case.

Q: What was one of your favorite case experiences?

A: My first case as a project leader was a commercial due diligence on a media company. It was a complex case, with only three weeks to recommend investing or not; coordinating a cross-office team from London, New York, and Toronto; and having very little data in the data room. The team stayed positive and, using a hypothesis-driven approach, leveraged expert interviews and survey data to present a data-driven recommendation to the client. In the end, the client was confident in our analysis and made the investment in the target.
