International Accounting Project Leader, BCG Global Services
At BCG, Explorers are unafraid to embark on new journeys. They try new solutions to untangle complex problems and drive transformational change. Melissa goes deep to understand challenges.
I joined BCG in Boston as a project leader in global accounting after relocating from New York. In this role, I work closely with BCG finance and accounting staff around the world. Before joining BCG, I lived for several years in the UK, where I qualified as an associate with the London-based Chartered Institute of Management Accountants.
Since taking on this role, I have learned that BCG is truly a global company, committed to developing and investing in staff around the world.
Melissa holds a biology degree from Mount Holyoke College and is a chartered accountant with the UK's Chartered Institute of Management Accounting.
My best LGBT Network experience has been joining the quarterly calls. Not only is it an opportunity to meet our members around the world, but we are also given access to senior firm leaders in an intimate setting that allows us to learn about their expertise, career, and insight into how to thrive at BCG.
Diversity and inclusion have been driving factors throughout my life. They led me to study at Mount Holyoke and relocate to Europe for several years. This was also a big part of my decision to take the position at BCG. Through this role, I have access to the firm’s broad LGBT Network, and I am exposed to a vast amount of cultural diversity through my daily interactions with the 80-plus international offices.
A BCGer is willing to collaborate, listen, dig in, and learn. You have to able to ask probing questions and adjust your assumptions when required. We are great because we team, and everyone brings a different strength to the table. BCG is all about collaboration and finding a way to bring all of these strengths together in a cohesive solution.
The BCG community is vast. I'll often find myself reading a new article, and when I research the author or a person quoted as an expert, I learn it's one of my colleagues! I love that; it makes me feel connected and like what we do here really matters, that it really shapes the world.
I was part of a great organization, iMentor, which matches business professionals with high school students. Unlike other mentoring programs that only work with a selection of high-risk or high-achieving students, this program is integrated with an entire class, so we got to reach lots of kids and no one was left out.
Do it, but be willing to challenge others and be challenged. BCG is a complex, intelligent workplace that will keep you engaged. It isn't just a job.
