Like practically everything at BCG, recruitment is approached in a unique way. We challenge each other to find new ways to extend the family, and family is very much how we view recruiting at BCG. Admittedly it’s a diverse, frenetic, and eccentric family!
So when we are marketing BCG as a workplace at events, or trying to make a nervous interviewee more comfortable before one of their interviews, we are passionate because we know that the candidates we meet have every chance of being colleagues and friends in years to come.
It is hard to pin down what makes BCG a great place to work, but for me it comes down to how we treat each other. We care and look out for each other, and I never feel alone on a tough day. There is also a terrific sense of humor and playful curiosity that permeates the company, fueling the inquisitive nature of the work we do.
Oli has worked at BCG as international recruiting manager for two years. Prior to this, he was head of MBA admissions at London Business School. He holds a BA in history and politics from Oxford Brookes University and is a graduate of LBS's Emerging Leaders Programme.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: For me, it is the people. You are surrounded every day by passionate, bold, intelligent, and fundamentally nice people. I've never been in a job before at which I look forward to meetings, and at BCG they are the favorite part of my day.
Q: What characteristics do you believe define a BCGer?
A: Curiosity. I think all BCGers have an element of the Sherlock Holmes about them. They like problems and discussion. Also respect—we have a tremendous amount of respect for each other.
Q: What did you learn in your first year on the job?
A: I have never learned so much in one year—everything from deep technical skills to refining the way I speak in meetings. Everything is driven toward output and value. As support staff, we do training called “a day in the life of a consultant,” during which we work through a project and present to a principal at the end of the day. This training gives me a real understanding of what the job is and helps me feel engaged with the consulting team.
