I like solving problems. My journey at BCG has provided me with great opportunities to partner with clients on their challenges and to help them understand, define, and pursue the answers. Inherently, there is an overwhelming satisfaction that comes from seeing our client companies implement change agendas and succeed in market and the executives we work with achieve individual success and satisfaction.
I have been fortunate to grow up at BCG. I joined just after earning my undergraduate degree and found myself in an environment where I could develop and mature. Focusing on consumer industries has allowed me to work around the globe and across company value chains: building experience, growing confidence to challenge status quo views, and allowing me to become an advisor to senior business leaders. I get to help drive change—and although that comes with days of stress, it is ultimately a fantastic reward to see results in the newspaper business section or walking down the aisle of the grocery store.
Peter joined BCG following completion of a bachelor of applied science (chemical engineering) from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario (2001). He was successively promoted to partner in 2012.
Beyond the observation that the time my English-teacher parents had spent instructing me in sentence structure was likely wasted with the move to communicating through PowerPoint? For me, the initial year was all about confidence. I had come out of an engineering program and did not know to what extent I was lagging those from commerce backgrounds. That first year reiterated the inherent value of hard work—but also allowed me to trust my gut. I had good analytic instincts, and as a I learned some more about business I was able to have the confidence that my initial hypotheses were likely going to be on the right track.
It’s an ongoing choice. Initially, I likely came to BCG because it allowed me to prolong the decision about “what I would do when I grew up,” but subsequently I evolved in terms of what I was looking for. As my career advanced, I would regularly consider BCG versus potential alternatives, and in that calculus I regularly concluded that I was developing more within than I could outside the firm. Today, my relationships with specific clients and the internal teams I work with have a powerful draw that make the work fulfilling.
I serve on the board of Jays Care Foundation (the charitable arm of the Toronto Blue Jays). Initially I had helped through a pro bono assignment we did with the foundation and was subsequently asked to join the board. In that capacity, I am able to apply what I’ve learned in my “day job” by working on strategy and governance issues. But more rewarding, I also serve on our grants committee. We review hundreds of applications annually from worthy partners and organizations that are working with at-risk kids. It is grounding to be reminded of those who have very different challenges than my boys do—and also rewarding to see the impact our dollars can support.
