Enhancing the Competitiveness of "Made in China": Implementing Lean Production
China’s manufacturers have had significant growth and made substantial progress over the past 30 years. Nevertheless, facing the changes in the competitive landscape and various market shifts, China’s manufacturers must shift their focus to producing products for the middle markets. Improving internal production-management approaches and capabilities is critical to achieving sustainable competitiveness, and is also a highly challenging task. Many manufacturers started to introduce the philosophy and practices of lean production years ago. However, BCG’s experience and observations show that many enterprises in China have yet to achieve favorable results from such efforts. Based on the observed common setbacks, this BCG report analyzes the fundamental reason for the failure of lean production, introduces the essence of lean production, explores the three dimensions of the lean-production transformation framework, and provides suggestions for enterprises to pursue a practical path for production-management transformation.
