François D'Agostini

How do you get to utilize your unique skill set within a team?

As a BCG Platinion member, I usually bring deep technical expertise to cases. This lets me deliver value that differs from that provided by BCG consultants. We can build cross-functional teams consisting of diverse skill sets. With this, I can bring deeper content to a BCG analysis and stronger operational capabilities essential for leading tech teams efficiently.

What do you like most about your job?

I feel I can make a difference for our clients. BCG allows me to have a large impact on very important projects. Being in this position would be almost impossible if I had stayed in industry. Besides, working with a consulting firm gives me the opportunity to learn about many different new industries, with a lot of brilliant people. I bring important skills to the table, but I learn a lot as well.

Can you give an example of a time where your team really came together in a big way? Put another way, what's the best team experience you’ve had?

The best times are when I bring my skills to the table and I partner with a BCG consultant. This way, we have the best of both worlds. We can craft a solid tech strategy, when we have both content and a crisp, clear, and compelling presentation. A good example is a time when we were creating a software integration process on a case. We were organized in a very efficient way: I was focused on the product backlog and on making sure that valuable content was produced. My consultant colleague was ensuring that all processes, metrics, and outside communication were correctly handled. It was great to see this kind of efficiency in action.

What does innovation mean to you, and how do you innovate in your role?

To me, innovation is when you combine two things that usually are not used together, and you create a new form of value from that combination. Innovation requires a certain kind of culture, where people are interested in a large number of areas and fields. When you know these areas, you can try different ways of combining them and come up with new ways of doing things. This is why I am interested in almost all aspects of tech: from app development to machine learning, from UX/UI to microservices architectures. Being familiar with and knowledgeable about a large spectrum helps me come up with interesting ways to create a product or solve a client’s problems. Of course, I have to spend a lot of time on learning, everywhere I go. I make this part of my routine.

What skills or talents do you hope to develop in the next few years?

I want to continue learning and improving my skill set around product management and tech expertise. One thing I want to be good at is large-scale systems and ways to help companies scale their processes and products to millions of users. To learn this skill, I have to engage with large, ambitious programs, and BCG gives me that opportunity. In addition, I want to continue to mix a product vision with my strong tech background, because I feel that the combination of these two skills is very important and is currently lacking in industry.
