Managing Director & Partner
Houston
João Maciel joined the Lisbon office of The Boston Consulting Group in 2003 and moved to the firm’s Dallas office in 2007. He rejoined BCG in the Houston office in 2013 after spending more than two years at Energias de Portugal (EDP).
João is a core member of the firm’s Energy practice and specializes in green energy, energy efficiency, and the environment. He has managed strategy, organization, and operational improvement projects, mostly in the energy, financial services, transportation, telecommunications, public, and consumer goods sectors.
João has helped develop a comprehensive business plan for the rooftop solar area of a North American energy company. He has also engaged in an operating model review and an assessment of synergies for a North American energy efficiency company. He has worked on business plans and strategies, and on the vendor due diligence and negotiation strategy for the carbon credit-allocation process of a major Iberian utility.
Between his two tenures at BCG, João was in charge of the energy services unit at EDP. He set up and developed the energy efficiency business and distributed solar-photovoltaic businesses to become market leaders in Portugal and initiate expansion to the Spanish market. Until 2003, João worked for a tech-based company he cofounded in 2001.
BCG has developed an effective approach that utilities can use to minimize the odds of being blindsided by a major supplier-related event.
As the market consolidates and expands, rich opportunities are emerging. Established companies should adjust their business models, and newcomers should secure the right capabilities.
