US manufacturing organizations are at a point of enormous opportunity. They are newly cost competitive and have access to a host of promising new digital technologies. But currently, manufacturers can’t really tap the opportunity. The resource they urgently need, for both the near- and long-term future, is a bigger, more highly skilled workforce. Employees require digital skills but also adaptive skills like critical thinking and complex problem solving in order to install, operate, maintain, and optimize the new technologies.
