LONDON— UK Prime Minister Theresa May has today recognised Boston Consulting Group (BCG) London Partner, Elliot Vaughn, with a Point of Light award for his commitment to LGBT+ activism through his charity GiveOut.
Having supported LGBT+ causes individually for years, Elliot founded GiveOut in early 2018 to raise funds from the British LGBT+ donor community, and allies, and make grants to LGBT+ advocacy groups around the world to help them protect and promote LGBT+ human rights.
In its first year the charity has fundraised or received pledges of more than £250,000, collaborating with prominent figures in the LGBT+ community, such as Antonia Belcher, Suki Sandhu OBE and Steve Wardlaw. In September 2018, the charity won ‘Breakthrough of the Year’ at the Third Sector Awards.
GiveOut has been welcomed by parliamentarians from the APPG on Global LGBT+ Rights including Nick Herbert MP, Lord Cashman, and Baroness Barker, as well as charities including the Kaleidoscope Trust, OutRight International and ILGA, along with LGBT+ advocates around the world.
BCG was a founding sponsor of GiveOut and continues to partner with the charity. Stuart Quickenden, Senior Partner and Head of BCG’s London office, said, “We’re immensely proud of all the work Elliot does to help promote and further LGBT+ rights globally, both within our own organisation and externally through GiveOut. His efforts in this space have inspired everyone at BCG for many years and it’s great to see him be publically recognised.”
Elliot is also the global leader of BCG’s LGBT+ network, Pride@BCG. The network celebrated its 20th anniversary last year and strives to make BCG the most fulfilling firm for worldwide LGBT+ community members to work for. It sits in BCG’s wider Diversity & Inclusion network, which in the UK includes Women@BCG, Family@BCG and the London Black Network.
Elliot is the latest recipient of the Points of Light award, which recognises outstanding volunteers who are making a change in their community and inspiring others. It comes ahead of International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia on 17 May, raising awareness of LGBT+ rights violations around the world.
In a personal letter to Elliot, Prime Minister Theresa May said, "Through GiveOut you are providing a unique platform for people to donate to LGBT organisations outside the UK, helping distribute crucial donations to activists who are promoting equality across the globe. You should be extremely proud of what you have achieved and I wish you the very best in your continued work."
Elliot said, “I am passionate about helping members of our LGBT+ community to show their solidarity and support for brilliant LGBT+ advocates around the world. It’s such a special and unexpected honour to have the Prime Minister recognise the impact that GiveOut is having. I am deeply inspired by the courage and work of LGBT+ human rights advocates around the world and dedicate this award to them.”
Elliot is the 1173rd winner of the Points of Light award, which has been developed in partnership with the hugely successful Points of Light programme in the USA. Over 6,000 Points of Light have been awarded in the USA, and former Presidents have publicly supported the partnership with Points of Light UK. There is a similar cross-party approach to the UK programme and MPs from different parties often present their constituents with their Points of Light awards.
