Athina Gerangelou

In Athina’s Words

Right after completing my engineering studies in Athens, I moved abroad and ended up working in private banking in Geneva. I lived abroad for almost six years, and I was looking for an opportunity to return to my home country, a position where I could add value while continuing to learn and develop my skills.

BCG Athens has been proven to be an excellent opportunity. Being part of a small office, we enjoy the entrepreneurial and welcoming spirit of a start-up along with the unlimited access to knowledge and opportunities of a large international organization. In such a volatile and uncertain environment, we have the opportunity to achieve significant client impact and support change. And as everywhere in BCG, learning is boundless, and every case is literally a new experience!

About Athina

Athina holds an MSc in management of technology and entrepreneurship from École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne and a diploma in electrical and computer engineering from the National Technical University of Athens. Prior to joining BCG, Athina spent almost five years in private banking in Geneva, working for JPMorgan and before that for HSBC Private Bank, where she mainly focused on credit risk and project management.

Why did you choose to work at BCG?

One of the main reasons why I chose to work here was the intellectual curiosity. The level of intellectual effort required is an important aspect of working at BCG. The complexity and ambiguity in the nature of the work requires challenging your mind every day in order to solve difficult problems or develop new ideas. All colleagues across levels are constantly challenged by peers, seniors, or clients on their opinions and judgments. But it is this collective brain power that makes this job unique, accelerates your development, and uncovers innovative and impactful solutions.

What inspires you about BCG?

The passion and persistence that most people have about this job. It is definitely a demanding environment, and it is not rare to end up very late at night in the office dealing with tough questions or assignments that seem to be unrealistic. During those moments, I feel inspired by tireless BCG colleagues who manage the pressure effectively and focus on delivery while maintaining the high energy and a joyful atmosphere within the team.

What was one of your favorite case experiences?

I had the chance to work on the strategy of a Greek pillar bank during probably the most uncertain and critical period of Greek banking’s recent history. Liquidity constraints and recapitalization needs were only few among the many challenges that the industry was facing. It was fascinating to experience how our analysis, modeling, and knowledge could support senior management to address vital strategic questions, optimize their business model, and define their future competitive positioning.
