At BCG, Pioneers have the courage to take action on unique insights. They share and activate ideas that enable our clients to gain the competitive edge. Matías challenges the status quo.
Flexibility at BCG has allowed me to focus my career on what I really enjoy—working closely with clients to unlock value by applying hands-on approaches and building competencies.
My career has taken me from commanding a naval ship in Patagonia to helping companies implement improvement initiatives in different industrial sectors—and BCG has been the key enabler to make this career step-change possible. I joined BCG with the goal of building up my operational skills and making a difference at a different level—within a culture where teamwork is also at its core.
The ride has been extremely inspiring, rewarding and global. I work with a group of highly talented and motivated professionals who inspire me every day to continue growing into the best I can be. Flexibility at BCG has allowed me to focus my career on what I really enjoy: working closely with clients to unlock value by applying hands-on approaches and building competencies. I have experienced firsthand how global BCG is. I'm currently doing an Ambassadorship in Sydney and frequently flying to global meetings.
Matías holds an MS in management and an MS in engineering (ESD) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He also received a BS in naval engineering from the Chilean Naval Academy where he graduated with maximum distinction.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: One of the aspects I love about my job is the opportunity to work widely across the client organization—from the shop floors to the boardroom. The setting enables us to go deep in having a comprehensive understanding of the client's environment and problem before moving into potential solutions. It allows us also to generate innovative and sustainable solutions working side by side at different levels as partners—something very difficult to achieve when you are part of an organization.
Q: How has BCG helped you grow and succeed?
A: One of my key learnings has been how to leverage my military skills to support clients in their transformation efforts. For instance, in a recent case, we implemented several initiatives often used in the military to help our client transform their way of working. They included, for example, the use of structured—results-oriented—performance meetings, strong emphasis on situational awareness through visual management, and frequent coaching sessions to client team members. The combination of these skills with BCG’s strong analytical and problem-solving tool sets helped us to achieve double-digit increases in productivity from day one.
Q: What international experiences at BCG have been the most interesting for you?
A: Coming to Sydney as an Operations practice Ambassador has been a unique experience in every sense. Not only have I deepened my operational experience working for different industries and clients but I have also had the privilege to meet such a nice group of BCGers who shared the same collaborative and friendly culture we have in Santiago!
