BCG GAMMA Senior Data Scientist, New York
BCG provides me with intellectual stimulation, exposure to the world of business leaders, and the best team members to work with and be friends with.
I’m an engineer by training and a social scientist at heart, so BCG has been the perfect place for me because it is where the art meets the science. For every project, you need to be both a data ninja and a psychologist or politician in order to solve the complex problem at hand and influence the strategic decision of the client.
This is true for every project I work on, be it building a pricing-suggestion engine to assist account negotiation for a major logistic client, creating a network optimization model that enables visibility of a client’s network asset and helps to cut costs, or developing a predictive model that selects store locations by anticipating competitors’ behavior. My biggest “aha” moment on a case was when we correctly predicted the acquisition target for a major US retailer’s competitor by using an optimization model within the framework of game theory. We ended up anticipating the merger half a year before it happened by using this integrated approach of having a highly engineered solution under the guidance of economic theory. The day the merger was announced, we won the client’s trust, and this experience also reinforced my confidence in the BCG way of integrated problem solving.
Yunke completed double majors in economics and engineering at Peking University and holds a master’s degree in engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
