Coming from a structural engineering background, I didn’t have a very clear idea of what exactly I would be doing when I first joined the Lisbon office of The Boston Consulting Group. I was expecting to use my analytical and problem-solving skills to support our clients—and that would be pretty much it—but I had no clue about the amazing journey I was about to begin.
Between then and now, I have had the privilege of teaming up with amazing individuals from the most diverse cultures. Together, we have driven value for clients in industries as different as energy, governmental institutions, consumer goods, and infrastructures, across eight countries in three continents. All cases have been different and challenging, making the on-the-job learning from colleagues, clients, and experts never-ending and truly satisfying for curious minds.
Joao holds an MBA from INSEAD, an executive master’s in sustainability energy systems from the MIT Portugal Program, and a master’s in civil engineering from the Technical University of Lisbon.
Q: What characteristics do you believe define a BCGer?
A: In my opinion, people are one of the most differentiating aspects of BCG. The profiles and backgrounds of our colleagues vary widely—a large source of value for case teams—but I believe we all have a common set of skills that incorporate the company's values: listening skills, teaming ability, intellectual curiosity, perseverance, dedication, strong presence, and, of course, analytical acumen.
Q: What international experiences at BCG have been the most interesting for you?
A: BCG has allowed me to live and work in more than five countries, so I have been lucky to have several interesting international experiences. The one that has probably marked me the most was my first project in the Middle East. It was about the definition of the long-term strategy for an energy utility, including topics such as pricing, infrastructure optimization, and long-term supply planning. We had a team of four people on the ground (of four different nationalities), and the client team was extremely engaged and committed to change, hence completing the perfect set-up.
Q: How do you maintain a sustainable career balance at BCG?
A: Commitment and dedication are definitely essential to the work we do at BCG, and sometimes it is not easy to balance that with our personal life. In my opinion, it is very important to be straightforward with the entire team well in advance regarding personal "rules" and commitments so we can prioritize and support each other. For example, practicing sports is very important for me (including for my productivity at work), so I discuss with the team at the start of the case that I would like to be able to exercise three times per week.
