In the past six years at BCG, I have worked across seven different industries—including financial services, health care, social impact, and energy—on a variety of topics ranging from financial technology, performance management, organization design, mergers and acquisitions, cost optimization, and growth strategy. Each case has been a unique learning experience with its own set of highs and lows!
The greatest satisfaction to me comes when the client appreciates the work that the team has put in. As part of my current engagement, we are helping a bank launch innovative products to compete in the fintech space. At one of the recent press launches attended by the bank's top management, there was public acknowledgement of the role BCG had played in helping the bank shape its strategy. I was asked to join in the official photograph. It's days like these that make all the effort worth it.
Neha holds an honors degree in economics from Delhi University and an MBA from Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore.
Q: When did you know you belonged at BCG?
A: As the cliché goes, I didn’t join BCG for the long term. I came to BCG as a fallback option because investment banks had stopped hiring during the global crisis. However, three months into BCG during my first project, my preferred private equity firm sent me an offer letter. At that time, I was working on a project that promised to get millions of Indian households financially included into formal channels of banking. I went back and forth on my decision, but I finally decided to stay. It has now been six years since that decision.
Q: What characteristics do you believe define a BCGer?
A: BCGers are go-getters. Once we set our eyes on a goal, there is very little that can stop us from getting there. We strike the right balance between free thinking and practicality. We like to innovate but also know how to implement out-of-the-box solutions. And finally, we work internally and externally as friends; we like to take everyone along on the way.
Q: If you could compare what you do with any other job, what would you say?
A: The beauty of BCG lies in its diversity. And no other job can bring in that element singularly. So the appropriate comparison would be a mix of many other jobs: multiple roles in the corporate world (from the CXO level—strategy head, chief of staff/HR, chief operations officer—to middle management roles of supply chain control, procurement manager, etcetera), jobs in the finance world (investment banker, as in the case of M&A), as well as an advisor to the government. An equally important element of our job draws parallel from that of a sports coach and mentors—in the way we support the people at BCG to excel and grow in their career.
