My journey to BCG was rather unorthodox, since I joined through the acquisition of a company. As a passionate entrepreneur, the thought of joining a larger company originally gave me some pause. However, once on the inside, I discovered that BCG had managed to create an astonishingly entrepreneurial environment where people have tremendous autonomy to create and innovate.
BCG has allowed me to continue to pursue my passion for computing and AI, but with greater exposure and impact than I’ve ever had before. I get to work with incredible colleagues to design and implement cutting-edge technology that changes the way that some of the biggest companies in the world operate. There’s not much more a builder could want.
Allen has a bachelor of computer science from the University of Washington. He started his career at Amazon and then went on to found two (now exited) startups. Now at BCG, he focuses on building large-scale AI solutions and bringing them to life for businesses around the globe.
The quality of people at BCG. I’ve never worked at a place where I am so consistently flabbergasted by how smart yet humble and likable everyone is. It makes coming to work each day a pleasure, and it’s this teaming that is the secret behind how we can get incredible things done.
BCG’s tremendous focus on professional development has been a revelation to me. The company pours so many resources into ensuring that every employee gets exactly the training, support, and feedback they need to grow. Our trainings and conferences have taken me all over the world. They’ve allowed me to network with amazing people and also equipped me with skills that I can apply immediately to my client work.
Being a mentor is more than simply giving advice or teaching a skill. To me, it starts with being observant about identifying someone’s needs, even if they can’t clearly articulate them to you. Then you need to thoughtfully deliver guidance around this need, in a manner that will be most receptive by the mentee. Lastly, the mentor needs to help identify opportunities to put this guidance into practice to create the necessary room for growth.
One of the most surprising things about BCG is how tight knit the offices feel. In Seattle, people are genuinely friends with each other and actively find time to hang out outside the office. We get to know each other’s interests, families, and pets! In our office, we even take a trip to ski at Whistler each year, which is something I always look forward to.
Be prepared to learn—a lot. You will be constantly surrounded by incredibly talented people who are the foremost experts in their field. If you come in with an open mind and an eagerness to improve your own skills, you will be rewarded with a tremendous amount of growth and personal satisfaction.
