Fostering the development of Industry 4.0 in Argentina
THE ERA OF INDUSTRY 4.0
We are facing a new manufacturing transformation cycle driven by new digitally-enabled technologies named Industry 4.0. In this context, in October 2017, BCG -together with the Production Transformation Secretariat of the National Ministry of Production- conducted an online survey comprising 78 executives of 66 large industrial companies from different sectors in Argentina. The objective was to learn about the progress in the implementation of new technologies on production processes of their companies, and also about the main challenges they face during this transformation.
DEGREE OF IMPLEMENTATION
The survey results indicate that, even though Industry 4.0 is present at the planning discussions of Argentinean companies, only 30% of the executives surveyed stated that their companies have implemented specific initiatives, showing that there is potential to speed up adoption of new technologies. Technologies related to intelligent factories, production control and real-time performance management are considered as some of the most important ones by the companies.
CHALLENGES, CAPACITIES AND ACTIONS
In order to speed up the adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies, the companies must solve multiple challenges. Lack of qualified staff, uncertainty concerning investment return and resistance to change are the main challenges identified by the executives surveyed. Argentina’s Government is pushing forward an ambitious program to foster production transformation, but it is also fundamental that each company designs its own mid and long term strategy to increase competitiveness leveraging the opportunities arising from Industry 4.0.
