At BCG, Storytellers synthesize complex information and ideas. They believe in bringing the whole team together to get a broader perspective. Jan finds clarity in a complex world.
What I love most at BCG is that I am paid to think, not only to do—both about clients' issues and my own development.
While energy and sustainability have always been my main professional interests, I'm also quite a wanderer. I like to do and learn new things every day, which is what brought me from the energy and sustainability industry to BCG. At BCG, I have gotten the chance to work in many industries, such as pharma, aviation, insurance, and banking. I'm very happy to apply this experience now that I'm working mainly in energy again.
What struck me most after joining BCG was the willingness of even very senior people to spend time on my development to make me succeed. BCG is a great environment in which to grow and chart your own course; it's entrepreneurship within a multinational environment. I also value very much that I am actually paid to spend time thinking, not only doing. Beyond that, it's just lots of fun.
Jan holds an MSc and a BSc in mechanical engineering and an MA in economics from University of Leuven, as well as a BA in applied economics from University of Antwerp.
Q: What is a typical day like for you?
A: I always start my day deciding on the two or three things I should do that day to achieve my medium-term goals. I love how the answer to this question is different each day. It can include taking a couple of hours to reframe a problem and find a creative solution, making sure to spend time with my client to get buy-in and transfer capabilities, or putting effort in to the development of my team.
Q: What’s the biggest impact you have had with your work?
A: On one of my first cases, my client wanted to relax a contract with one of their customers due to capacity issues, implying a loss of revenues of €10 million annually. I challenged that solution and together we found an alternative option to keep those revenues, for a one-off investment that would be earned back within a few years.
Q: What are your long-term career goals?
A: I don't have a very explicit long-term goal. I want to be doing things I find interesting and challenging and that keep me developing. So far, I have not found a single other company where I can do that better than at BCG.
