Associate, New York
At BCG, Explorers are unafraid to embark on new journeys. They try new solutions to untangle complex problems and drive transformational change. Shruti has the courage to take action.
My BCG managers supported my growth by having more confidence in me than I had in myself and pushing me beyond my comfort zone. They opened my eyes to my true capabilities and strengths.
Though my educational background is in finance and economics, my case experience at BCG allowed me to explore completely new and exciting areas, including digital health, consumer health, nonprofit, and more. Furthermore, each of these cases challenged me in different ways and helped me develop a completely holistic skill set.
I originally joined BCG to be a part of a diverse, intellectually driven community, but I've come to realize that it's so much more than that. It's a supportive environment that encourages me to take risks, try new things, and meet new people. More important, it's also a place where I've met some of my best friends and greatest mentors.
Shruti graduated from the University of Pennsylvania (Wharton and College of Arts & Sciences) with a BS and BA in economics.
Q: What did you learn in your first year on the job?
A: Coming to this job straight out of college, I really had a great deal to learn in my first year. However, each case helped me build a part of my "associate toolkit." From writing decks to working with clients to complex financial analyses, I developed a strong quantitative and qualitative skill set in my first year. Beyond that, one of the most important things I learned was to have confidence in myself and not be afraid of taking risks. In a job that constantly changes case to case, it's easy to feel unprepared and out of your depth, but I remind myself of these lessons each day and at the start of every new case!
Q: What international experiences at BCG have been the most interesting for you?
A: While BCG offers numerous ways to work internationally, my experience was through my summer internship. During this time, I was staffed on a Financial Institutions case in Jamaica! Though it sounded like a summer in paradise, it was also a fantastic learning opportunity. Although we performed similar functions as what we would in the States, there was an added complexity of understanding the client culture and broader Jamaican culture. We also had a great case team that became like my extended family during the week; today they are some of my closest mentors and friends!
Q: What opportunities are you excited about at BCG and beyond? What are your long-term career goals?
A: After spending a couple years at BCG, I was ready to explore something completely different and decided to pursue a secondment. This is a fantastic program BCG offers, which allows us to work for another company for 6 to 12 months and then come back to BCG and resume our careers. This "externship" opportunity will allow me to apply the skill set I've learned thus far, develop a different perspective by working in an industry role, and explore what I may want to do longer term. After my secondment, I hope to attend business school as one more step in figuring out my long-term career goals!
