In Thomas’s Words

When I joined BCG as a young graduate from an engineering school with a major in applied mathematics, I wanted to broaden my horizons and work on various issues in different industries. I have not been disappointed! From heavy industrial machinery to chewing-gum manufacturing, passing by mobile phone plans and the pharmaceutical industry along the way, I have learned about many different industries. I’ve also been able to immerse myself in the organization of companies, and I’ve contributed to their strategic vision and participated in the implementation of real change.

I joined BCG for these projects, but today I stay at BCG for the rich personalities of the people I am working with on a day-to-day basis. They make BCG such a special place. Because of the confidence that is shown in you, you continuously push your limits! And I do like to work at a company that gives you the opportunity to develop to your full potential in an open environment—as is the case within the LGBT Network.

About Thomas

Thomas holds an engineering degree with a major in applied mathematics from École Centrale Paris. He also earned his master's degree in actuarial science from Université Paris Dauphine.


How has the LGBT Network helped you in your BCG career?

The LGBT Network is a unique opportunity to connect with people from around the world who share a common inspiration. As such, it has always been a safe place to get advice from my mentors, whether in the form of client-management questions (should I come out to a client?) or career tips. It is also a great way to expand your network within the firm and connect with people from outside your office if you are keen to travel abroad. And finally, if you want to engage, challenge existing beliefs, and push ideas around, it is a great opportunity to shine!

What do you like most about your job?

BCG simply gives you opportunities you cannot find elsewhere. There is no other company that allows you to face high-level problems and clients as soon as you complete your studies. I did not imagine I would facilitate an executive committee meeting for a multinational company at age 26! And those opportunities are not limited to just projects; there are plenty of ways to engage, like in the LGBT Network. Every day at BCG is unique.

When did you know you belonged at BCG?

As soon as I passed the interviews! All of my interviewers were fantastic, and I particularly liked the simplicity, frankness, and trustworthy atmosphere of our discussions. I was sure I would be warmly welcomed, and this feeling was reinforced over the next months by my fellow newcomers, my project teams, and the LGBT Network.

What did you learn in your first year on the job?

Probably much more than at school! Working at BCG has drastically changed my way of addressing issues. I have learned to use the inductive approach, through which we first identify a limited number of hypotheses that we then test afterwards. This method enables us to prioritize and quickly find out the most impactful solutions for our clients. As soon as new consultants arrive at BCG, we interact with clients and very quickly develop the skills necessary to convey our recommendations simply and efficiently.

What was one of your favorite case experiences?

At the end of 2014, I had the opportunity to work on the editorial line of a US media startup. This project led us to develop advanced data analysis tools to identify key trends and opportunities for editorial development for our client. Among others things, we conducted automatic analyses of more than 40,000 videos in order to assess their meaningful and recurrent themes. The startup atmosphere, return trips to New York, and immersion in the digital universe made for a powerful and stimulating cocktail!

What groups or organizations have you gotten involved with at BCG?

As soon as I arrived, I got involved with the LGBT Network. I now coordinate its activities in Paris and also take care of our global network of representatives within each office. Our objective is quite simple: make sure that any gay, bisexual, lesbian, or transgender person can develop to his or her full potential at BCG. We see it every day—information and talks can really make a difference. BCG is extremely active on these issues. In particular, we filed the amicus brief with the Supreme Court of the United States to advocate same-sex marriage. I am very proud to be part of a company that challenges the status quo, including within its own organization!
