Yinka Horton

In Yinka’s Words

My first job in my career was at an aircraft manufacturing company. There, I learned about traditional manufacturing skills and about how to create optimization and predictive models to improve manufacturing process efficiency. After that, I decided to join a class-one railroad company. I had a better understanding of traditional systems, but I wanted to learn about logistics on a larger network of systems.

I always had my eye on the future and wanted to apply my knowledge and education in multiple industries and functions. I specifically looked for an opportunity with BCG because I thought that would expose me to a large variety of industries. I was right. At BCG, I’ve been able to work on cases that are in manufacturing, transportation, health care, retail, and energy. What I like most about BCG is that I am always learning about different industries, building new skills, using new tools, and learning about myself.

What do you like most about your job?

At BCG GAMMA, we have the opportunity to contribute to case teams as thought partners who are considered experts in analytics. Having the opportunity to work in an atmosphere where people listen to me because they value the ideas that I bring to the table has encouraged me to become more outspoken and to show initiative. I enjoy the experience of learning from others and others learning from me. Working with individuals from different departments, offices, and backgrounds has taught me how to be a valuable thought partner in different settings.

What characteristics do you believe define a BCGer?

A BCGer is a self-starter—someone who sees an opportunity and isn’t afraid to act on it. To succeed at BCG, you also need self-discipline and you can’t be afraid to speak up about your concerns. A BCGer learns from every interaction and every case experience.

What is something that has surprised you about working at BCG?

I was most surprised by how each person I’ve met at BCG has such an interesting life outside of the company. I have a colleague who acts and directs in movies and short films. One of my managers is a photographer outside of work. I’ve met several people who love to run marathons. The diversity at BCG isn’t just about backgrounds, education, and place of origin but is also about everyone’s interests.

What are some of your favorite things to do outside of the office?

Outside of the office, I am a Zumba instructor. I love dancing, especially Zumba. I teach at safe houses for young women who have been victimized by human trafficking. I am very passionate about giving back to the community and helping these women regain their self-confidence through working out and dancing. I also enjoy spending time with my dog and traveling.

Why is BCG a good place for a woman to work?

The first day I started working on the Chicago GAMMA team, I was the fifth analyst who had joined. Out of the five senior analysts, four of us were women. I realized that BCG is committed to diversity on a large scale. Seeking more involvement in diversity initiatives, I was encouraged to start a Women in GAMMA affiliation group. BCG is a great place for women to work because they aren’t made afraid to have uncomfortable conversations, to learn from each other, and to take action. They’re encouraged in all these ways, throughout their careers at BCG.
