Working in Johannesburg

Boston Consulting Group’s Johannesburg office opened in April 2011 with two people and has since grown to more than 130 consultants and support staff made up of 20 nationalities. The Johannesburg office is BCG’s largest office in Africa, servicing clients in South Africa and across sub-Saharan Africa.

Work and Culture

Johannesburg is one of the top 40 metropolitan areas in the world, an international financial center, and the economic hub of South Africa. Primarily known as a gold prospecting capital in the late 1800s, the city still serves as the headquarters of many mining companies. In recent years, however, service and manufacturing industries have become much larger parts of the city's economy.

The vibrant, diverse BCG community in Johannesburg collaborates with clients to help shape the future of the region. We work with a range of organizations, from start-ups to major corporations—as well as multinationals with a growing interest in Africa.

Our office gives you the opportunity to be involved in exciting projects in Africa’s economic powerhouse. Today, South Africa leads the continent in industrial output, mineral production, and electricity generation. Its major industries include banking, information technology and telecommunications, real estate, transportation, broadcast and print media, health care, and a strong consumer retail market.

Being a part of the Johannesburg team also means joining a savvy, creative, and supportive group of people from around the world who are investing their talents in improving business and society—and also having fun.

I decided to join BCG in Johannesburg because there are a lot of exciting projects that we can get involved in, both in South Africa specifically and in Africa more generally. That was something that I really wanted to be a part of.

The best part of working at BCG is how you continually redefine your capabilities. I surprise myself everyday!

I’m setting up a start-up accelerator. We’re focused on early-stage pan-African startups, getting them all of the institutional and structural support they need to succeed.
