There is something about getting caught up in an impromptu brainstorming conversation with your principal and partner about a pressing client issue. It's infectious. And you'll be surprised by how quickly you've developed highly specialized knowledge on various topics.
I studied psychology in college and was always fascinated by what motivates and informs human behavior and collaboration. Before starting at BCG, I was slightly nervous about not having a background that is more traditionally associated with consulting. But as soon as I started, I realized that the people I would be working with all have vastly different backgrounds and interests, and hearing them talk about their passions (especially when in alignment with case work) is a big part of what makes BCG such a great place to work.
One of my favorite moments so far occurred after I presented some preliminary findings to my principal. He was so excited about the topic and the direction we were going that he jumped up to the whiteboard to start sketching things out, asking me clarifying questions and for my opinions on certain issues. For me, this interaction really solidified the reasons I wanted to work at BCG to begin with. My Principal was not only trusting my research but also pushing me to articulate my informed opinions on how our client and its competitor truly stacked up—all just a few weeks into my first case. Moving forward, I know that BCG is the right place to help me refine my own passions, while developing critical skills I can apply to a diverse array of cases and topics.

Like many people at BCG, I wanted a job that would challenge me on a daily basis and help me develop a broad set of skills. Beyond that, though, it was important to me that I find a company with people who are truly passionate about what they do and the value they deliver. Through my conversation with a partner during my final interview, I learned that working at BCG can open a lot of doors. But the flip side of that phenomenon is that the people who stay are staying because they absolutely want to. That acknowledgment really resonated with me then—and resonates with me now, since I have seen for myself how truly passionate BCGers are about their client relationships, innovative thinking, solutions for unique problems, and the networks they build within BCG.
One of my favorite things about BCG is the mix of having people your own age, along with experienced managers and mentors. I've maintained strong relationships with my previous managers and feel comfortable going to them, my Corporate Development advisor, my class dean, and my staffer for advice or a fresh perspective on something I'm working through. BCG makes personal development a priority—but beyond that, BCGers all take interpersonal relationships and mentoring seriously. This is something that I have benefited from greatly as an associate, and I hope that continues.
The Boston office feels like a really strong community. Everyone who isn't traveling comes in on Fridays, and as a result it can be difficult at times to actually be productive since there are always people you want to catch up with. Aside from the monthly office meetings, people across cohorts and nonconsulting staff get together on their own to grab lunch, have coffee chats, and organize impromptu Friday drinks. I love that there's a level of involvment both in the community with various charity walks and local nonprofits and within the office as well. There were three of us running the Boston Marathon this year, and everyone rallied behind us for an office-wide fundraiser, coupled with endless words of encouragement and good luck e-mails—all things I am hugely appreciative of within my office community.
