EnBW (Energie Baden-Württemberg AG), Germany's third-largest electric utility, has been actively engaged in mobile and Internet businesses, particularly through corporate venturing. With full support from BCG, the company has taken steps to build on its successes by launching a digital program to be implemented in three phases.
During the first phase, EnBW sought to define and pursue digital initiatives in all its business units and across units. The initiatives have been built around its business models, new offerings, processes, and required capabilities.
In the second phase, the company wanted to bring the program to life by scaling up a different way of working (using agile methods). It also sought to renew its IT landscape and the role of IT in the business and build cross-company analytic capabilities.
BCG helped the utility establish the digital program, collaborating to complete the first two phases.
EnBW and BCG are about to embark on the third phase, deliberately opting not to establish the digital effort as an additional corporate program. Instead, the third phase focuses on embedding digital elements in an intelligent way into the utility's existing programs. This approach will build the foundation for a full digital scale-up at EnBW.
