BCG’s Social Impact Work in Europe

This sampling of BCG’s work with nonprofits and NGOs in Europe highlights some of BCG’s social impact efforts in the region.

The Ocean Cleanup

The Ocean Cleanup is a Dutch startup dedicated to removing the 5 trillion pieces of plastic from the ocean. Founded by Boyan Slat when he was just 18 years old, today The Ocean Cleanup is an organization of more than 60 employees that has raised more than $30 million in funding. BCG works with The Ocean Cleanup to help maximize their impact and effectiveness, from developing a funding strategy for their plastic extraction technologies, to building a revenue-generating business connected to their core activities in order to generate sustainable income streams.

Pinacoteca di Brera

The Pinacoteca di Brera is a leading global museum in Italy, attracting more than 370,000 visitors annually. BCG analyzed the institutions performance capabilities and offered recommendations as the museum attained autonomy in governance. With BCG’s support, the Pinacoteca di Brera presented the first integrated profit and loss statement of any Italian state-owned museum and experienced a 15% increase in visitors in its first two years of autonomy. BCG has continued to support the museum, most recently by helping develop its latest strategic plan.

JOBLINGE

JOBLINGE is a private, public, and social sector collaboration dedicated to integrating underprivileged German youth into the labor market. Since it was founded in 2008 by BCG and BMW’s Eberhard von Kunheim Fondation, JOBLINGE has supported more than 7,500 youth, at 30 locations across Germany . Thanks to the joint involvement, more than 70% of participants successfully make it into traineeships. In 2014, JOBLINGE was honored as "integration project of the year" and in 2017 received an impact award from PHINEO. BCG’s involvement spans across the initiative, including leading JOBLINGE’s operational and development strategies to ensure further growth and impact. Independent analysis shows that JOBLINGE is the cheapest and most effective mechanism in Germany for placing individuals into jobs. In order to qualify young refugees and integrate them into the labor market as early as possible, the initiative developed a second program: JOBLINGE Kompass.

Tretyakov Gallery

Tretyakov Gallery is a popular Russian museum, housing more than 180,000 pieces of global art. The gallery has subsequently received international recognition for the first time in its existence, ranking among the most-visited museums in the world. BCG worked with the organization to improve visitor experience, embrace digital technologies, and strengthen the museum’s financial performance. By refocusing and redesigning the organization structure, processes, and initiatives, the gallery nearly doubled the amount of visitors frequenting the museum each year and surpassed its private funding goal by 40%.

Norwegian Refugee Council

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is an independent humanitarian organization helping people forced to flee their countries due to war, hunger, persecution, and climate change. NRC helps save lives and rebuild futures in more than 30 countries. BCG worked with NRC to increase their private sector funding and streamline a methodology to be shared with other organizations to promote collaboration and data sharing. BCG also supported a full overview of the NRC’s organization with a goal of becoming fit for purpose for 2020 and beyond.
