According to the report, while many companies have programs in place to promote gender diversity, most claim that the programs are ineffective in bringing about the necessary change. Among S&P 500 companies, for example, female representation is so low that there are more male CEOs named John than there are women. BCG’s Andrea Ostby, coauthor of the report, says that women are just as ambitious as men, but “the daily grind and a lot of deep-rooted cultural issues at companies make them feel the struggle isn’t worth it.” In order to better support women, the study finds that involving men as “diversity champions” is the key to improved outcomes for diversity at businesses.
