In his guest column for Forbes, BCG’s Grant Freeland talks about today’s abundance of structural reorganizations—and how to successfully implement one. He says that “reorganizations typically don’t produce the desired result,” citing a Flipping the Odds for Successful Reorganization that says 52% of the 1,040 respondents surveyed reported that their reorganizations were either “unsuccessful” or produced “mixed” results. To succeed, Freeland suggests proceeding “incrementally, in a layered, cascading manner,” rather than the common top-down, C-Suite approach. He says that while understanding the structure of the organization is important, it is equally important to understand the culture and decision rights, and involve more than just a handful of people in the process.
