BCG’s Grant Freeland writes a guest column for Forbes about the lack of women in top leadership positions at large US corporations. He notes the increased likelihood of highly accomplished women taking big risks in their careers when an opportunity arises to lead a major organization: “a ride off a ‘glass cliff.’” Studies on this phenomenon found that “’'when there was a crisis on the horizon...or where there was risk involved’—women were ‘almost exclusively’ chosen to fill leadership vacancies… [which suggests] they ‘were being set up to fail, whether intentionally or not.’”
