BOSTON—Boston Consulting Group (BCG) has achieved ISO/IEC 42001 certification for implementation and governance of its Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS). BCG was among the first 100 organizations worldwide to receive the designation, and the only premium consulting firm.

ISO/IEC 42001 is an international standard that specifies requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining, and continually improving an AIMS within organizations. It is designed for entities providing or utilizing AI-based products or services, ensuring responsible development and use of AI systems.

As the world’s first AI management system standard, ISO/IEC 42001 provides a structured framework for governing artificial intelligence across its full lifecycle, including risk management, ethical considerations, transparency, and continuous learning and improvement.

This milestone reinforces BCG’s commitment to developing, deploying, and using AI in a manner that is secure, responsible, and trusted by clients, partners, and regulators.

Because this global standard guides BCG in building AI systems that are safe, transparent, and accountable, the benefits to BCG’s clients are many. They include:

  • Confidence that all of BCG’s AI engagements meet globally recognized governance and risk standards
  • Assurance that AI outcomes are designed to maximize performance and value while minimizing risk
  • Engagement with a firm committed to continuous improvement in AI quality

“Achieving ISO/IEC 42001 certification reflects BCG’s longstanding focus on responsible innovation,” said Steven Mills, managing director and partner at BCG, and the firm’s Chief AI Ethics Officer. “As AI adoption accelerates across industries, robust AI quality and risk management is critical to unlock the full value potential of AI. Business leaders need confidence that the organizations they partner with appropriately manage AI. This certification provides assurance that our AI systems are designed and managed with strong controls, accountability, and transparency.”

“Proactively addressing the management of both AI risk and quality is critical to unlocking the business potential of AI,” said Sylvain Duranton, global leader of BCG X, BCG’s tech build and design unit. “This certification, and BCG’s recent recognitions by analyst firms for our leading role in delivering end-to-end digital transformations with lasting impact highlight our commitment to helping clients unlock measurable value from AI.”
