Masaki Hamura joined Boston Consulting Group in 2020. He is a core member of the firm’s Travel, Cities & Infrastructure, and Public Sector practices. Masaki is currently a Fellow at BCG Henderson Institute (BHI). His BHI research has focused on the future of the city, in particular, the impact of societal demands like climate change and sustainability and new technologies such as generative AI, on urban forms.

Over his nearly 30-year career, Masaki has developed expertise in both business and academia. On the business side, he has exceptional leadership experience in the digital industry, with a strong strategy, business development, and operations background. Prior to joining BCG, Masaki worked at LINE (Japan’s top messenger app) as an Executive Officer of Corporate Business Strategy, Twitter as a Head of Brand Strategy for East Asia, and Google as a Head of Strategy and Sales Operation for Japan.

On academic side, he was formerly Dean and a professor at the Institute of Future City Studies at Tokyo City University, where he led several joint research projects on the future of cities, including smart cities and digital transformation of local governments. He still holds a position as a special professor of the Faculty of Design and Data Science at the university and teaches courses on innovation platforms and social system design.

Masaki has served on numerous urban development committees, including as a Member of Consultative Group of Expert at G20 Smart City Alliance, World Economic Forum. He is also a frequent speaker at Japan’s major industry events Innovative City Forum, Social Innovation Week, and Japan Innovation Day.
