India's ports are entering a defining phase where digital infrastructure is becoming as important as physical assets. BCG and AWS co-authored a paper titled "DigiBandar - A Digital Twin Blueprint for Indian Ports." It outlines a reference framework for accelerating this shift across Indian ports through seamless data integration, real-time visibility, and AI-enabled decision-making.
The paper positions Digital Twin technology as the foundation for future port operations, enabling real-time KPI monitoring, predictive planning, and coordinated execution across all stakeholders. Drawing on global best practices, and India’s unique context, it highlights fifteen top use cases and about thirty KPIs in the areas of waterside, terminal, city-side, and sustainability.
The DigiBandar framework advocates for a unified and resilient digital platform that integrates all stakeholders and is based on common data standards and consistent KPI definitions. Execution is based on three things: a scalable technology backbone, next-generation ways of working, and sustained capability and ecosystem development, led by a Port Transformation Office to ensure governance and rollout.
The blueprint charts a phased journey, from end-to-end lighthouse port deployment to nationwide roll-out into a network of connected, intelligent, and sustainable ports”.
