In the short term, remote meetings and shift scheduling can be facilitated through technology, says Lovich. And while a fully automated workplace won’t happen overnight, the factory of the future will be controlled by its “digital twin”—a smart digital replica of what happens in a plant based on massive amounts of data collected by sensors—while upskilled employees monitor and oversee factory functions remotely.
