Five moves to build an advantage your competitors can't quickly copy

Australia has a head start it is quietly wasting. According to BCG’s AI at Work 2026 study, 86% of Australian frontline employees use AI regularly, compared to 75% in the UK and 62% in the US. But using AI and capturing its value are not the same thing. Among regular AI users, 52% report saving a full working day or more every week, while 61% of employees get little or no guidance on what to do with that time.

Base AI models are accessible to every competitor, on comparable terms, within months. What’s genuinely hard to replicate is what your people do with them. The opportunity lies in converting unmanaged, bottom-up productivity into P&L impact, service quality, improved capability and workforce advantage.

For CEOs, this means rethinking how jobs are redesigned, how workforce planning is done, how critical skills are retained, how leaders create the conditions for change and how the operating model is adapted to sustain value.
