The Boston Consulting Group has been active in the Russian market since 1990. In 1994, we opened the Moscow office to be closer to our clients in Russia and CIS. During more than a decade of significant growth, BCG Moscow attained a leading position in management and strategy consulting in Russia and the CIS, which are among the world’s most dynamic emerging markets. With many consultants permanently working in our office—in addition to consultants from other offices working as experts on projects in this market—we offer world-class consulting services to leading Russian and international corporations.
BCG in Russia and the CIS contributes a portion of its time to the not-for-profit sector, focusing mainly on domestic projects. Examples include SOS Villages (a fund-raising strategy), Tretyakov gallery (fund-raising strategy, design, and implementation), and the Moscow Symphony Orchestra (fund-raising strategy). We work on two to three such projects every year, using around 10% of our CIS staff.
At BCG Moscow, we also have a charity committee—a member-driven and member-funded group made up of BCG Moscow employees and alumni. The committee’s mission is to build a community of socially responsible leaders and provide our colleagues and family with an opportunity to give back to our local community.
Since March 2006, BCG’s social-impact team has been supporting an orphanage in Kalyazin, a small town 180 kilometers from Moscow. The Kalyazin orphanage is home to more than 70 children from 2 to 18 years of age. Although it was started by just a few individuals, this project has grown into a full-scale, company-supported program.
What makes BCG’s support of this orphanage different from that of other corporate donors is that it is focused not on basic monetary donations but on changing the orphaned children’s future by striving to understand and support their dreams. We have launched an educational program to help recognize each child’s natural talents, increase the children’s chances of completing higher education, and help develop their professional skills. This varied program has included things such as the sponsorship of tutors and private lessons, computer classes, support in getting driver’s licenses, and classes in dancing, music, and sport.
Since 2015, we have been running another bottom-up driven social-impact project: ToDoGood, a social volunteering platform for business services workers and nonprofit organizations. BCG created the concept and is now running a pilot program with partners. (The website www.todogood.com will be launched soon.)
At BCG Moscow, we encourage an atmosphere of openness and flexibility, leaving room for individuals with diverse backgrounds and personalities. Although the office is rather large, its enthusiastic consultants and support staff claim that they are one team. To help them connect with each other and get the best of BCG, we have a social committee that makes sure our employees, both on the consulting and business services side, can enjoy fun activities outside of work, stay in good shape, socialize with colleagues—and maybe try something they have always dreamed of.
