Standard We Reference
As our guide, we use the World Wide Web Consortium’s Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA. We treat this as our target standard for new and existing site features, recognizing that achieving it consistently across a large, evolving site is an ongoing process rather than a one-time state.
What We Do
- Design. We evaluate color contrast against accessibility thresholds during design review, for both new page elements and maintenance of existing ones, using online contrast-checking tools.
- Build. We build site functionality so that it can be operated using a keyboard alone, without requiring a mouse or other pointing device.
- Content. Where feasible, we provide text alternatives for non-text content, such as images and video.
- Testing. We use automated accessibility testing tools to conduct spot checks and identify issues. We also periodically test pages using screen-reading technology, to confirm content is read correctly by assistive technology.
Ongoing Nature of This Work
Accessibility standards and technology continue to evolve, and our site includes a large and growing volume of content. We view accessibility as a continuous improvement effort. We may not have addressed every accessibility barrier at every point in time, but we are working to identify and reduce them on an ongoing basis.
